Maryland Fine Arts Content Standards: Music

1.1.b. Identify and define standard music notation symbols for articulation and expression.
  • Students will identify and define important music notation symbols for articulation and expression found in their solo piece.


1.2.d. Play with expression and technical accuracy a stylistically varied repertoire of instrumental literature with a difficulty of 3, on a scale of 1 to 6, including some solos performed from memory (for students enrolled in instrumental performance ensembles).
  • Students will perform a solo piece by memory with expression and technical accuracy.


1.4.a. Read and perform music that includes sixteenth notes and rests in duple, triple, and mixed meters including four sixteenth notes grouped, dotted half notes and rests followed by quarter notes and rests, dotted quarter notes and rests followed by eighth notes and rests.
  • Students will read and perform music that consists of time signatures and varied rhythms commonly found in music of grade level 3 or above.


4.2.a. Apply criteria to critique personal performances, improvisations, and compositions and the performances of others
  • Students will use the Solo & Ensemble adjudication form to critique personal performances.


4.3.b. Compare different performances of the same selection of music; analyze and communicate how interpretation affects the listener’s reactions and preferences.
  • Students will listen to three recordings, two which will be professional level and analyze how each performer interpreted the music differently and how it changed the character of the music.
